本展は三部作の第二作にあたる作品群である。
昨年発表した『WALTZ』では、非現実や想像の世界を描いた。それに対し本作では、現代の東京、特に渋谷を舞台に、都市の中をさまよう感覚や、言葉にならない寂しさへと視線を向ける。
タイトル「can’t anybody see」は、Portisheadの楽曲「Road」冒頭のフレーズに由来する。
「どこにしまったのだろう。」
確かに持っていたはずなのに、見つからない。探しているものは分かっている。しかし、探し続けても見つからない。もしかすると、もう失われてしまったのかもしれない。
コンサートツアー撮影で各地を訪れても、その街を知る時間はほとんどなく、ホテルの窓から見える景色だけが、その街の記憶として残る。そうした断片的な風景が、本作のイメージの源泉のひとつとなっている。
渋谷の街並みや人物、そしてヌードを通して、都市の中をさまよう感覚や、言葉にならない寂しさを写し出そうと試みた。身体そのものではなく、その奥にある孤独や悲しみにも目を向けている。
映画『ロスト・イン・トランスレーション』のようなフィーリングを、写真によって伝えたい。
三部作は、来年予定されている第三作によって完結する。第三作では、ノスタルジーや遠い記憶、昔聴いた音楽のような感覚がテーマとなる予定である。
薮田 修身｜Osami Yabuta 1967年生まれ。ロサンゼルス滞在中にHerb Rittsの作品に影響を受け、本格的に写真を始める。1992年、写真家・斉藤一男に師事。1995年に独立後、ニューヨークを拠点に活動し、アメリカ同時多発テロを機に帰国。ファッション、広告、CDジャケット、アーティスト撮影など幅広い分野で活動。Mr.Childrenのコンサート撮影なども手がける。人物との距離や呼吸、その場に漂う空気を丁寧にすくい上げるポートレートを軸に、作品制作を続けている。

Osami Yabuta Photo Exhibition

This exhibition presents the second part of a trilogy.
While WALTZ, presented last year, explored a world of the unreal and the imagined, this new body of work turns to present-day Tokyo, particularly Shibuya, focusing on the sensation of drifting through the city and a loneliness that is difficult to put into words.
The title can’t anybody see comes from the opening line of Portishead’s song “Road.”
“Where did I put it?”
I know I had it. But I can’t find it. I know what I’m looking for, yet no matter how long I search, it remains out of reach. Perhaps it has already been lost.
Traveling from city to city while photographing concert tours, there is rarely enough time to truly get to know each place. Often, the only memory that remains is the view from a hotel window. These fragmentary landscapes became one of the sources of imagery for this work.
Through the streets of Shibuya, its people, and the nude figure, Yabuta attempts to capture the sensation of wandering through the city and a loneliness that resists words. His gaze is directed not simply toward the body itself, but toward the solitude and sadness that lie beneath the surface.
Through photography, he seeks to convey a feeling akin to that of the film Lost in Translation.
The trilogy is set to conclude with its third and final part next year. The final work is expected to explore nostalgia and distant memories—the kind of feeling evoked by music heard long ago.
Osami Yabuta Born in 1967, Osami Yabuta began pursuing photography after being inspired by the work of Herb Ritts while living in Los Angeles. In 1992, he studied under photographer Kazuo Saito. After establishing himself as an independent photographer in 1995, he worked primarily in New York before returning to Japan following the September 11 attacks. His work spans fashion, advertising, CD covers, and artist photography. He has also photographed concerts for Mr.Children. Alongside his commercial work, Yabuta continues his personal practice, creating portraits that quietly capture the distance and rhythm between photographer and subject, and the atmosphere that emerges in their presence.
