本展は、三部作の第二作にあたる作品群。
昨年発表した『WALTZ』では、非現実や想像の世界を描いた。それに対し本作では、現代の東京、特に渋谷を舞台に、都市の中をさまよう感覚や、言葉にならない寂しさへと視線を向けている。タイトル「can’t anybody see」は、Portisheadの楽曲「Road」冒頭のフレーズから。
「どこにしまったのだろう。」
確かに持っていたはずなのに、見つからない。探しているものは分かっている。それでも見つからない。もしかすると、もう失われてしまったのかもしれない。
その感覚は、Mr.Childrenのライブツアー撮影で各地を訪れる中で残った記憶とも重なっている。街を知る時間はほとんどなく、ホテルの窓から見える景色だけが、その土地の記憶として残ることもある。そうした断片的な風景が、本作のイメージの源のひとつとなった。
渋谷の街並みや人物、そしてヌードを通して写し出そうとしたのも、都市の中をさまよう感覚や、言葉にならない寂しさだった。身体そのものではなく、その奥にある孤独や悲しみにも目を向けている。
そこにあるのは、映画『ロスト・イン・トランスレーション』のようなフィーリング。そうした感覚を、写真で伝えたい。
三部作は、来年予定されている第三作で完結する。第三作では、ノスタルジーや遠い記憶、昔聴いた音楽のような感覚をテーマとする予定。
薮田 修身｜Osami Yabuta 1967年生まれ。ロサンゼルス滞在中にHerb Rittsの作品に影響を受け、本格的に写真を始める。1992年、写真家・斉藤一男に師事。1995年に独立後、ニューヨークを拠点に活動し、アメリカ同時多発テロを機に帰国。ファッション、広告、CDジャケット、アーティスト撮影など幅広い分野で活動。Mr.Childrenのライブ撮影なども手がける。人物との距離や呼吸、その場に漂う空気を丁寧にすくい上げるポートレートを軸に、作品制作を続けている。

Osami Yabuta Photo Exhibition

This exhibition is the second part of a trilogy.
While WALTZ, presented last year, explored the unreal and the imagined, this work turns to present-day Tokyo, particularly Shibuya, focusing on the sensation of drifting through the city and a loneliness that is difficult to put into words. The title can’t anybody see comes from the opening line of Portishead’s song “Road.”
“Where did I put it?”
I know I had it. I know what I am looking for. And yet, no matter how long I search, I cannot find it. Perhaps it has already been lost.
That feeling overlaps with the memories that remain from traveling around Japan while photographing Mr.Children’s live tours. There is rarely enough time to truly get to know each city, and sometimes the only memory that remains is the view from a hotel window. These fragmentary landscapes became one of the sources of imagery for this work.
Through the streets of Shibuya, its people, and the nude figure, Yabuta seeks to capture the sensation of wandering through the city and a loneliness beyond words. Rather than focusing on the body itself, his gaze extends to the solitude and sadness within.
What he is seeking is a feeling akin to that of the film Lost in Translation—a feeling he hopes to convey through photography.
The trilogy is set to conclude with its third and final part next year. The final work is expected to explore nostalgia, distant memories, and the kind of feeling evoked by music heard long ago.
Osami Yabuta Born in 1967, Osami Yabuta began pursuing photography after being inspired by the work of Herb Ritts while living in Los Angeles. In 1992, he studied under photographer Kazuo Saito. After establishing himself as an independent photographer in 1995, he worked primarily in New York before returning to Japan following the September 11 attacks.
His work spans fashion, advertising, CD covers, and artist photography. He has also photographed live performances for Mr.Children.
Alongside his commercial work, Yabuta continues his personal practice, creating portraits that quietly capture the distance and rhythm between photographer and subject, and the atmosphere that emerges in their presence.
