\u200bUnraveling the history of mythology reveals that gods are destined for one of two fates.
One is to be forgotten. The other is to survive by altering their form.
\u200bOnce, goddesses stood at the center of the world. They governed the earth, ruled the moon, and reigned within people’s prayers as the very source of life. However, as society transformed, their status was stripped away. As matriarchal worldviews were overwritten by patriarchal ones, these goddesses retreated from their thrones, relegated to the roles of consorts to male deities or other auxiliary figures.
\u200bEventually, with the dawn of new religions and rational thought, they faded entirely from the realm of human prayer. Yet, gods do not die. They are simply forgotten. These once-mighty deities conceal themselves in the depths of human memory, transforming into “lesser gods” who leave but faint traces behind in the names of lands, the names of flowers, or within ancient folklore.
\u200bIn this body of work, I imagined the forms of these forgotten goddesses and turned my lens toward them.
\u200bDeprived of prayer and no longer called by their names, they no longer possess the power to move the world. They merely sink into the depths of myth, continuing to slumber in solitary oblivion. And yet, manifesting through the temple of the flesh, their quiet presence radiates a profound will that transcends words.
\u200bConversely, there is another fate for the gods.
\u200bIt is a resilient divinity that survives by tenaciously shifting its form, even as faith wanes. At times a spirit of the land, at others a guardian of folk belief, or taking on the name of a new saint. The moon, fertility, destiny, music\u2014the primordial symbols humanity required to comprehend the world remain unbroken, lingering in our daily lives by donning masks suited to the era.
\u200bThe “lesser goddesses” slumbering in the depths of oblivion, and the “enduring goddesses” who navigate the tides of time to dwell beside us still.
\u200bCaptured through the lens, their bodies are fragments of lost mythology, and simultaneously, sanctuaries of the present moment. If gods are beings of eternity, then this era of silence\u2014where their names go uncalled\u2014is but a fleeting chapter in their endless existence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
