作家にとって約2年ぶり、神保町画廊では約6年ぶりとなる個展。新作を含む、さまざまな女性の心理を描き出すポートレート作品を展示します。
「一方、踊ると警察がくる街では」

約25年間、撮影スタイルは変わらず、市井の女性たちの話を聞き、そこからインスピレーションを得て写真にしています。
作品にはそれぞれタイトルがありますが、本展のタイトルは、その中の一点から持ってきました。
その作品の女性はダンサーで、自身の踊りについてこう語っていました。
「『宅建とります』とかなら、みんなから『いいね』って言われる。建設的な目標で、みんなに応援してもらえる。でもそうではなく、誰にも応援されない、自分にしかその喜びがわからないような、孤独でしかいけないところがある」
彼女は、路上で雨のなか踊ることもあるけれど、街で踊ると警察が来るそうです。その話を聞いて、私は「踊ると警察が来る街」に、自分がすっかり馴染んでいることに気づきました。
相応しい場でないと踊ることが許されないのがこの世界で、その「踊り」が意味するものは、人それぞれに違います。
私の被写体となる女性たちは、常識からこぼれ落ちるものを持っている人ばかりで、その姿を写真に写しているのだということを改めて思い出し、本展のタイトルとしました。
インベカヲリ★
1980年、東京都生まれ。写真家、ノンフィクション作家。短大卒業後、独学で写真を始める。2018年第43回伊奈信男賞を受賞、2019年日本写真協会新人賞受賞。写真集に『やっぱ月帰るわ、私。』『理想の猫じゃない』、著書に『家族不適応殺 新幹線無差別殺傷犯、小島一朗の実像』『私の顔は誰も知らない』『伴走者は落ち着けない 精神科医 斎藤学と治っても通いたい患者たち』、フォトエッセイに『なぜ名前に☆があるのか』など多数。AERA DIGITAL、幻冬舎plusで連載中。

“Elsewhere, in a City Where Dancing Brings the Police”

For the past 25 years, my approach to photography has remained unchanged:
I listen to the stories of women in everyday life, and create images inspired by what I hear.
Each work has its own title, but the title of this exhibition is taken from one of the pieces.
The woman in that photograph is a dancer, and she spoke about her dancing in the following way:
“If I said something like ‘I’m going to get a real estate license,’ people would say, ‘That’s great.’
It’s a constructive goal, something people can support.
But this is different. No one encourages it.
It’s something only I can understand, something that can only exist in a kind of solitude.”
She sometimes dances in the rain on the street, but when she dances in the city, the police come.
Hearing this, I realized how accustomed I have become to a place where dancing brings the police.
In this world, dancing is only permitted in appropriate settings,
and what “dance” represents differs from person to person.
The women I photograph all carry something that falls outside what is considered normal.
Remembering this, I chose this title for the exhibition.
Kawori Inbe★ Profile
Born in Tokyo in 1980. Photographer and nonfiction writer.
After graduating from junior college, she began photography as a self-taught artist.
In 2018, she received the 43rd Ina Nobuo Award, and in 2019, the Newcomer Award from the Photographic Society of Japan.
Her photobooks include I Guess I’ll Go Back to the Moon and Not an Ideal Cat.
Her nonfiction works include Maladjusted to Family: The Real Image of Ichiro Kojima, the Shinkansen Attacker, No One Knows My Face, and The Companion Cannot Be Calm: Psychiatrist Manabu Saito and the Patients Who Continue to Visit Even After Recovery.
She has also published the photo-essay Why Is There a Star in My Name?, among others.
She currently contributes to AERA DIGITAL and Gentosha Plus.
