本写真集『WALTZ』は、薮田修身本人が再生紙にコピーし、手折り・ホッチキス留めにて一冊ずつ手作業で仕上げたものです。7年間にわたり、同じ被写体と向き合い続けた写真作品を収録しています。2025年開催の個展『WALTZ』に際し制作されました。
暗闇の中で交わされる撮影者と被写体のセッション。
その往復する呼吸や距離のリズムを、探り当てるように明度やコントラストを調整し、像を浮かび上がらせています。
WALTZ is a handmade photo book, individually produced by Osami Yabuta.
Each copy is photocopied onto recycled paper, hand-folded, and stapled by the artist himself.
The book contains photographs created over seven years in continuous engagement with the same subject.
In the darkness, a quiet exchange unfolds between photographer and subject.
Adjusting brightness and contrast as if searching for their shared rhythm of breath and distance, the images are printed to gently bring the figures into presence.
薮田 修身｜Osami Yabuta 1967年生まれ。ロサンゼルス滞在中にHerb Rittsの作品に影響を受け、本格的に写真を始める。1992年、写真家・斉藤一男に師事。1995年に独立後、ニューヨークを拠点に活動し、アメリカ同時多発テロを機に帰国。ファッション、広告、CDジャケット、アーティスト撮影など幅広い分野で活動。Mr.Childrenのコンサート撮影なども手がける。人物との距離や呼吸、その場に漂う空気を丁寧にすくい上げるポートレートを軸に、作品制作を続けている。
