白と黒、光と陰、表裏にあるもの
コインで言えば裏と表で絵柄が違います。
しかしそれは同じものです。
物や人間にも表裏が存在しますが、かたちあるものだけでは無く、状況や環境そして人の欲望などの感情や性格にも同じように表裏が存在します。
人も社会も表裏一体で動いているのです。
私がNUDEに求めるものは、究極のポートレートです。
人間の秘められた感情を、カメラを透して覗き感じようとすると、人が自ら意識していない表裏を写真に写し込むことができます。
光が身体に陰を落とし、闇の中に曲線を浮かび上がらせる。
しなやかな動きや、息づかいの中に美を見いだす瞬間があり、潜むエロティシズムを感じた時にシャッターを切る。肉体を無防備な状態にすることで、人の普段見せたことのない美を引き出したかったのです。
普段から光をコントロールして撮影しています。
光は陰を作り、その影をコントロールしてフォルムを描き出しています。
光はものを輝かせますが、影は形を作り上げます。本当に重要なのは影の存在です。
何人ものモデルを撮ってわかったことは、本当に見たかったのは被写体である彼女らの裏側ではなく自分自身の裏側だったということです。
White and black, light and shade, and things with a front and back… A coin may be said to have a different pattern on each side. However, it is the same thing. Things and people also have a front and back, not just in the physical composition, but in different conditions and environment, in the personality, feelings, and desires of the individual, the two sides exist as well.
Man and society operate on this apparent dichotomy.
What I seek in the NUDE is the ultimate portrait. As if able to peer into places that people would keep private, a person can unconsciously expose both sides of themself when captured in a photograph. Light falls into the shadows of the body and curve lines hover in the dark regions. Seeking the instant in a supple movement or the moment between breaths, the shutter snaps at the moment of beauty in which eroticism lurks.
I usually control the lighting when I do a shoot. By controlling light and shadow,I can control the way that the shadow appears in the finished work. Light by its own nature will illuminate, but it is she shadow which gives form. The importance of shade and shadow in photography cannot be denied. What so many of the models I have photographed have come to understand is that I seek not to photograph the physical back side of the model, but the otherwise hidden side of who they are.
